Watercolor representing a farmyard with trees, it is made by Adolphe Hervier (1818 - 1879). Adolphe Hervier is a French painter and engraver, known for his rural scenes. During his lifetime, his style evolved from strict romanticism to an early type of impressionism.
Although Parisian, his favorite places for painting were Normandy, notably Honfleur, Le Havre, Rouen and Granville. This work perfectly evokes this affection for the countryside. A young peasant woman, shown from the back, works in a farmyard. The sylvan aspect recalls the School of Barbizon, geographical and spiritual center of a colony of landscape painters wishing to work “from nature”.
